Club Spotlight: Academy One Volleyball

As we count down to the 2025 SVL and YSVL seasons, we’re putting the spotlight on the clubs shaping the future of volleyball in NSW. One of those clubs is Academy One, a program recognised not only for its strong performances but also for its deep commitment to developing well-rounded athletes both on and off the court.

A Coaching Philosophy That Goes Beyond Skills

At Academy One, player development starts with purpose: delivering high-quality coaching, well-designed training sessions, and genuine growth. Every session is carefully tailored to suit the needs of the group, ensuring athletes are consistently challenged, engaged, and learning.

“Our focus is always on maximising time on court,” the club explains. “We want every player to get as many ball touches as possible, receive technical feedback, and walk away knowing they’ve improved.”- Lydia Xu, Club President

But the mission goes beyond skills and drills. Academy One is equally passionate about fostering a mindset of discipline, resilience, and humility — values that athletes can carry with them beyond sport.

“We aim to instil in our players not just a love for volleyball, but the mindset of elite athletes. Sport is a powerful teacher — it helps build confidence, character, and teamwork. That’s what we value most.” - Lydia Xu, Club President

Advice for New Players: Start with Curiosity

For young athletes thinking about joining the club or simply giving volleyball a go, Academy One’s advice is simple: just start.

“Get out there and give it a go — but approach it with curiosity,” Lydia says. “Enjoy the game, but also take the time to learn correct technique and form. Doing things properly and having fun don’t need to be opposites. Be humble, stay eager to improve, and surround yourself with people who are passionate. That mindset will take you far.” Lydia Xu, Club President

Small Wins, Lasting Impact

While Academy One has had its share of highlights, it’s the everyday wins that the club celebrates most.

“We’ve seen players start with us completely new to the sport, and with consistent effort and guidance, they’ve gone on to become key players in their school or state teams. Watching that growth — the persistence, the confidence, the support from teammates — that’s what really drives us.” Lydia Xu, Club President

Training at A1 is known to be intense, but it’s the way players rise to the challenge, support one another, and grow together that gives the club its heart.

Looking Ahead to the 2025 Season

With the 2025 SVL and YSVL seasons fast approaching, Academy One is buzzing with anticipation.

“We’re incredibly excited to see how our players perform after all the hard work they’ve put in. This season will be a real test of their development, not just in results, but in their confidence, teamwork, and love for the game. Our hope is that they walk away proud of how far they’ve come.” Lydia Xu, Club President

As Academy One continues to grow, it’s clear that the club’s success is about much more than what happens during a match. It’s about the people, the process, and the passion that fuels every serve, dig, and rally.
