Inspiring Opportunities for Women in Leadership
Published Tue 01 Nov 2022
Many exciting things are happening in and around Volleyball NSW as we continue to expand and grow. We believe you can’t be what you can’t see, or at least it’s a lot harder, so for the love of volleyball, we focus on opportunities to elevate women across our sport, share the stories of those doing amazing things in our community, and encourage others to follow in their footsteps.
Our senior leadership team is 66% female, which is a great base to start from, and we are focusing on professional development for all women, from Staff and Club Administrators to Officials and Coaches to those aspiring to one day be leaders in our community.

Office of Sport, Her Sport Her Way Funding
Volleyball NSW is excited to announce that we received Her Sport Her Way Funding from the Office of Sport.
Our focus is to lead a cultural change that empowers women to become leaders and role models in their local communities, on and off the court, increasing the number of women in leadership positions, inspiring the next generation, and enhancing future participation of women and girls in volleyball.
We have agreed on three deliverables this funding round to provide opportunities and reduce barriers to engagement:
- Female Leaders – development opportunities in coaching, officiating, and mentoring
- Inclusive Uniform Guidelines – to ensure everyone feels safe and comfortable participating
- Story Telling – from our community role models to inspire the next generation
Sport NSW Gender Inclusive Board Workshops
Volleyball NSW is also pleased to announce the successful application to be a part of the Sport NSW Gender Inclusive Board Workshops.
‘Gender-inclusive practices are paramount to sport and sport development, and at Volleyball NSW, we are constantly looking at ways to increase our exposure, including our capacity. We will continue to support the development of female leaders at all levels of our sport.’ Stated by VNSW CEO Baz Wedmaier.
Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) Scholarship
In alignment with Sport NSW’s priority projects to increase female leadership and gender-inclusive practices, COO Rebecca Walter has been selected as 1 of 3 Scholarship recipients to complete the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) Company Director Course expanding her knowledge of effective strategic business practices and providing guidance and leadership across the sport.
Rebecca highlighted, ‘this is an exciting opportunity to expand my knowledge and experience across all levels of best practice aligned with sound governance practices.’
Rebecca has also engaged in Professional Development opportunities with the CEW Leadership Course and the Sport Australia Mentoring Collective.
Sport Australia’s & NSWRL Women Leaders
Volleyball NSW Staff Briianka Nest, Alexandra Wladkoski, Lauren O’Shea and Grace Tam received PD opportunities through Sport Aus and NSWRL and were invited to a series of development workshops. The success of these applications highlights a proactive staffing base, seeking professional development opportunities aligned to the whole organisational approach to developing women as leaders. This will be a catalyst for accessing more opportunities for Volleyball in this space.
These are just a few of the exciting things happening in and around volleyball NSW as we continue to expand and grow, developing our people, processes, and community on our journey.
Stay tuned; there is much more to come in this space.
The Volleyball NSW Team.
