NSW Athletes Shine at the Pelligra SA Open: A Weekend of Success and Growth

The Pelligra SA Open, one of the premier events on the Australian beach volleyball calendar, showcased an outstanding performance from New South Wales athletes. With a blend of seasoned competitors and rising stars from the NSW Phoenix Academy, the state demonstrated its depth of talent across all divisions, leaving a lasting impression on both spectators and fellow competitors.

Leading up to the SA Open, the NSW Phoenix Academy athletes attended a high-performance training camp at the newly refurbished South Australian Institute of Sport (SASI). This camp provided a unique opportunity for athletes to observe and train alongside Australian Beach Olympians, while also connecting with peers from other states. NSW Phoenix assistant coach Kelly Hunter shared her thoughts on the experience:

“The SA Open tournament was incredibly well run, and we were fortunate to have perfect weather throughout the weekend. It was a great experience for our athletes to travel together, train at the state-of-the-art SASI Beach Volleyball Facility, and build relationships with athletes from other states. I’m confident we’ll see a few cross-state pairings in upcoming tournaments. We had some excellent results, with five podium finishes across the group.”

The weekend proved to be a resounding success for NSW athletes, with five podium finishes across various divisions. A standout moment came from NSW talent Stefanie Fejes, who made a triumphant return to the court after a successful 2024 international and domestic season. Fresh off her NSW Championship victory in December, Fejes, alongside her partner Jana Milutinovic (SA), claimed the SA Open Championship title. The pair has been a dominant force in both national and international competitions, and we eagerly look forward to seeing them continue their success in the 2025 season.

With impressive performances and solid teamwork, the NSW athletes once again proved their ability to compete at the highest level, while also fostering a sense of community and collaboration that will undoubtedly benefit them in future tournaments.
