NSW Phoenix Round 1 AVSL Recap

The Australian Volleyball Super League kicked off with an electrifying first round, setting the stage for a season brimming with intense competition, top-tier talent, and unforgettable moments. Fans were treated to thrilling men's and women's matches as teams battled it out to establish early dominance in the league. Here’s a recap of all the action from Round 1.

Match 1: NSW Phoenix Men vs CBR Heat

The NSW Phoenix men's team kicked off their season with a dominant performance, defeating Canberra Heat 5-0 in their first match. The Phoenix men showcased strong teamwork and powerful front and back row attacking to establish early dominance of the game. The strong blocking from Ethan Garrett proved a problem for the Heat attackers and allowed NSW to take control of the game. The victory sets a positive tone for NSW Phoenix men as they begin their campaign, demonstrating their potential as a top contender this season.

Mens Match Score: 18-11, 18:15, 18-11, 18:16, 18:12

Match 2: NSW Phoenix Women vs CBR Heat

Next up was the NSW Phoenix women against a young but strong Canberra Heat women's team. The match started with both teams testing the waters and siding out effectively, until a few errors by the Phoenix women off the back of some consistent serving from the Heat and allowed NSW to take set 1. Both teams displayed some strong attacking with NSW Captain Steph Phillips and Aina Gibbons giving a masterclass in tooling from the left side and Khiani Dodd from Heat showing her stability and strong cross-court attack. Ultimately the match was decided by the team who was more consistent from the service line and Canberra Heat claimed the match 2:3. Despite the loss the NSW Phoenix women secured valuable bonus points that will help them stay in contention for finals! 

Womens Match Score: 15:18, 18:7, 9:18, 17:18, 18:14
