Western Sydney Academy of Sport Indigenous Talent ID Day
Yesterday, Volleyball NSW (VNSW) had the honour of participating in the Indigenous Talent Identification (ID) Day, organized by the Western Sydney Academy of Sport at the Western Sydney University Penrith Campus. This event was a beacon of opportunity, aimed at uncovering the athletic potential of Indigenous youth in the region and guiding them towards high-performance sporting pathways.
Among the experts present was Phoenix setter and Australian Volleyroos captain Mikaela Stevens. Known for her leadership on the court and her dedication to the sport of Volleyball, Mikaela was on hand to use her extensive Volleyball experience to assist in identifying those with the physical attributes and potential to excel in the sport of Volleyball. Mikaela's presence not only provided invaluable insights but also served as an inspiration for the young athletes, many of whom were experiencing structured Volleyball sessions for the first time.
Reflecting on the day, Stevens said, "It's awesome to see the raw talent and potential these young athletes have. Events like these are crucial in not only identifying talent but also in inspiring these kids to pursue their dreams in sports. I'm excited to see how these regional academies help promote volleyball in our state and increase overall participation in volleyball within the younger age groups".
The Indigenous Talent ID Day was more than just an event—it was a celebration of community, culture, and the shared love of sport. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and camaraderie as athletes supported one another, shared their stories, and connected over their mutual aspirations. For many of these young athletes, the day was not only an opportunity to demonstrate their physical capabilities but also a chance to build relationships and create memories that will last a lifetime.
The event was a resounding success, with many talented individuals identified for further development. The pathway from this day forward is filled with potential, and VNSW is proud to have played a role in helping these athletes take their first steps towards what could be promising sports careers.
